Archerfield (Fidra)

Overview: Fidra Links is the more wooded of Archerfield's two modern courses, combining tall Scots pines with the fast-running coastal ground of East Lothian. The 18-hole, par-72 layout measures 6,942 yards from the back tees and changes character during the round. The early holes work through the pines, where the trees shape the preferred line and temper the sea breeze. From the short but demanding 12th onward, the course opens into more traditional linksland. Rolling fairways, firm approaches and deceptive greens make placement more important than a simple pursuit of distance. The course sits within the Archerfield estate near Gullane, with broad views toward the Firth of Forth and the island that gives the course its name.

History: Fidra Links opened in 2004 as part of the revival of golf at the Archerfield estate. The official estate history identifies David J. Russell as the architect of both Archerfield courses and distinguishes Fidra, with its pine forest and fast-running links, from the later Dirleton Links on coastal land with an older golfing history. The modern routing was therefore created as a new course while drawing on the landscape and golfing traditions of the East Lothian coast. Its design has settled into a setting already surrounded by some of Scotland's most established courses.

Did You Know? Fidra Links is named for the small island and lighthouse visible from the course. Archerfield's official account says the island is believed to have inspired Robert Louis Stevenson while he was staying at nearby Marine Villa, adding a literary connection to the coastal view beyond the fourth hole.
