Downfield

Overview: Downfield is an 18-hole parkland course on the edge of Dundee, set among woodland, mature trees and natural wildlife. The course profile is par 73 and 6,817 yards. Tree-lined holes and water in play on seven holes give the layout a varied rhythm, while the changing colour of the parkland keeps the setting distinctive through the seasons. James Braid's design uses the land as a serious part of the test: the scorecard has several long holes, but accuracy and a clear decision from the tee are just as important as power. The course has the atmosphere of an inland championship venue rather than a resort layout. It is scenic without becoming decorative, with the natural surroundings, water hazards and tree positions repeatedly influencing the line into the green.

History: Downfield's early golf was played over the nine-hole Baldovan course, and the original Downfield Golf Club was established in 1895. During the First World War the land returned to agricultural use. The club was re-established in 1932, initially over another nine-hole arrangement, and demand soon led to an extension to 18 holes. As Dundee expanded, the club and council renegotiated the land in the early 1960s; the course was revamped and five of the original holes were retained in the current layout. Downfield hosted the inaugural Scottish Open in 1972, later staged Open qualifying and welcomed the 2024 Senior Open Final Qualifying. Its competitive history is now part of the identity of this James Braid parkland course.

Did You Know? Paul Lawrie qualified for the 1999 Open Championship at Downfield before going on to win the Claret Jug at Carnoustie. The club later honoured him, linking the Dundee course directly to one of Scotland's most memorable modern Open victories.
