Dundonald Links

Overview: Dundonald Links is a modern 18-hole links in the heart of Ayrshire's golf coast. Kyle Phillips worked with the coastal ground to create generous but strategic fairways, undulating greens, deep rough and gorse, while areas of pine give the course a slightly different texture from the most exposed traditional links. The wide choice of tees makes the routing accessible, but the shaping of the land and the placement of hazards still demand thoughtful lines into the greens. Dundonald has the visual openness of links golf with enough variation in elevation and vegetation to keep each section distinct.

History: The property has golf roots in a Willie Fernie design from 1911, created by the 1883 Open Champion. After two World Wars the site was almost unrecognisable. Loch Lomond Golf Club purchased the property in 2003 and engaged California-based architect Kyle Phillips to create the modern course. The Kyle Phillips course opened in 2005, and later improvements plus the 2021 clubhouse and accommodation development turned it into a full stay-and-play destination while retaining its connection to the older Ayrshire golf landscape.

Did You Know? Dundonald became a serious championship venue quickly. It hosted the first stage of European Tour Qualifying School from 2008 through 2011, Senior Open qualifying in 2012, the Boys Amateur Championship in 2014 and the Ladies Scottish Open in 2015 and 2016. The 2017 Scottish Open was won by Rafa Cabrera Bello after a final-round 64 and playoff, adding a major professional chapter to the course's young history.
