Overview: Papendal sits in the southern Veluwezoom and feels immediately different from the flatter courses elsewhere in the Netherlands. The ground rises and falls naturally, the bunkering is prominent, and the rough can be wonderfully punishing when it is allowed to grow. Even though the layout is compact in places, the variety of lies and elevation changes gives the round real texture. It is sporty, natural and consistently engaging.
History: The Edese Golfclub was officially founded on 19 June 1978 by a small group of golf enthusiasts originally aiming for a course in the municipality of Ede. When that plan fell through, the club moved to Sportcentrum Papendal on Arnhem’s territory. The first nine holes, designed by Frank Pennink, opened in 1984. The full 18-hole course was completed in 1993, with Joan Dudok van Heel overseeing the expansion. Later renovations were carried out by Frank Pont (2005–2009) and Michiel van der Vaart (2013 onward).
Did You Know? The club was founded in 1978, but the full 18-hole course was completed in 1993. The first nine were designed by Frank Pennink, while Joan Dudok van Heel played a key role in the early Papendal golf project and the later expansion. Despite its name, the course is actually located on Arnhem’s side of the municipal border.
