Overview: The North Course at Monte Rei Golf & Country Club, located in the rolling hills of the eastern Algarve near Tavira, Portugal, is a brawny championship parkland course designed by Jack Nicklaus. Characterized by its manicured turf, mature cork trees, and dramatic mounding, the course features wide, sweeping fairways and contoured green complexes protected by deep white sand bunkers. The layout sits on the Algarve hills, offering water hazards on several holes that demand strategic positioning and a precise approach game.
History: Opened in 2007, the North Course was designed as a low-density signature venue to establish the eastern Algarve as a golf destination. Nicklaus and his team spent months shaping the terrain to ensure that each hole is isolated from the others, maintaining a quiet resort atmosphere. The club has consistently ranked among the top courses in Portugal, and a second Nicklaus South course is under development.
Did You Know? Monte Rei is known for its resort service, where tee times are spaced a generous 12 minutes apart to ensure that players feel as if they have the entire property to themselves. The Mediterranean-style clubhouse houses a Michelin-starred restaurant and offers views of the course and the Atlantic Ocean.
