Overview: New South Wales Golf Club occupies the Cape Banks headland at La Perouse, where Botany Bay meets the Pacific and the ground rises and falls through coastal heath, exposed ridges and rugged shoreline. The 18-hole, par-72 course is presented as links-style golf, but its character comes from the varied terrain as much as from the sea views. Uneven lies, changing wind directions, native vegetation and strategically placed bunkers make club selection and positioning important. The official club description calls the course strategic and rugged, and that combination is clear in a routing that asks players to adapt from hole to hole rather than rely on one repeating style of play.
History: The course opened in 1928 after Dr Alister MacKenzie had been involved in its original routing. The layout has evolved through later work and improvements, while retaining the coastal setting and strategic intent associated with the early design. The club’s current account notes that the course has recently been remastered by Mackenzie & Ebert, placing the latest work within a long history of careful refinement rather than wholesale replacement. New South Wales has also been a major tournament venue, including the 2009 Australian Open and other national championships.
Did You Know? The club’s course brochure notes that its four par-three holes and four par-five holes point in each of the compass directions. That is more than a neat statistic: it helps explain why the wind can change the character of the same type of hole during one round. The brochure also counts 59 bunkers across the course, giving the coastal ground a distinctly strategic layer.
