Overview: Hollinwell is the course of Notts Golf Club in the Nottinghamshire hills near Kirkby in Ashfield. The heathland layout uses sandy, undulating ground, heather and gorse, with elevation changes that make the course feel larger than its yardage. From the championship tees it is a par 72 of about 7,029 yards, with the natural slopes shaping both the drives and the approaches.
History: Notts Golf Club was formed in 1887 and moved to Hollinwell around 1900. Willie Park Jr. laid out the original 18 holes, which opened in 1901. J.H. Taylor and the club professional Tom Williamson then advised on improvements, and Williamson continued to develop the layout while serving as professional, greenkeeper and clubmaker for more than five decades.
Did You Know? The original Hollinwell course was only about 5,500 yards because the gutta-percha ball was still in use. As the Haskell ball became common, the course had to grow quickly, reaching about 6,300 yards by 1906 while retaining Park's heathland foundations.
