Overview: Old Head of Kinsale is widely considered one of the most visually spectacular and dramatic golf courses on Earth. Built on a massive, diamond-shaped headland extending over two miles into the Atlantic Ocean, the course is surrounded on all sides by sheer, 300-foot cliffs. While purists occasionally argue it isn't a traditional links due to its cliff-top soil, the sheer drama of playing over the crashing ocean on at least nine of the holes provides an unforgettable, bucket-list experience characterized by extreme exposure to the coastal winds and incredibly thrilling tee shots.
History: Opened in 1997, the course was designed by a unique collaboration of architects, agronomists, and former tour professionals, including John and Patrick O'Connor, Ron Kirby, Paddy Merrigan, J.B. Carr, and Liam Higgins. The land itself holds deep historical significance; the ruins of a 17th-century lighthouse and ancient castle walls remain on the property, and the headland has served as a navigational landmark for centuries, most notably as the closest point of land to the sinking of the RMS Lusitania in 1915.
Did You Know? The spectacular par-5 12th hole, known as "Courcean Stage," features a heart-stopping tee shot that must be played blindly over a massive chasm in the cliffs, requiring players to trust their line completely as the ocean roars hundreds of feet below.
