Palheiro Golf

Overview: Palheiro Golf occupies the hills above Funchal, where Cabell B. Robinson’s par-72 routing moves through the Palheiro Nature Estate at roughly 500 metres above sea level. Madeira’s volcanic relief shapes the course, with fairways crossing valleys, climbing and falling between elevated tees, and opening onto views of Funchal Bay and the Desertas Islands. Subtropical planting, mature trees, and steep terrain give the round a strong mountain identity. Club selection is constantly affected by elevation, even when the scorecard distance looks familiar.

History: The course opened in 1993 after the historic Palheiro estate was adapted for golf, and nearby Casa Velha was restored for hotel use in 1997. The golf course remains part of a wider nature estate rather than an isolated development, which helps explain the mature landscape around the holes. Robinson’s routing works with existing slopes and vegetation, using changes in level as the main source of variety.

Did You Know? Palheiro Golf lies beside the Palheiro Gardens, one of Madeira’s best-known cultivated landscapes, so the course shares its setting with an important botanical tradition. The golf holes do not simply imitate a garden. They move through a more open estate landscape, with long views, deep valleys, and native and subtropical vegetation creating a clear contrast between the two experiences.
