Overview: Pontardawe’s 18-hole course rises above the town on the Cefn Llan side of the Swansea Valley. Its official description calls it a mixture of parkland and mountain golf; a more recent course account describes the front nine as parkland, with a higher, more open back nine. That change of ground gives the round a clear rhythm. At just over 6,100 yards and par 70, it rewards sound placement and club selection, especially where the course climbs and the views open toward the surrounding South Wales hills.
History: A group of local men formed the club in 1924, beginning with nine holes. The present 18-hole layout was completed in 1968, and professional Brian Huggett marked the opening with a round. These dates distinguish the club’s foundation from the completion of its full course. Later changes have included a lake beside the fifth and continued improvement of the playing and practice facilities, while the course’s two-part character remains central to its identity.
Did You Know? The fifth is a par three played over water, while the short par-four sixteenth is known locally as Pulpit. Those contrasting holes sit within a back nine that climbs into more elevated terrain, making the course feel broader than its yardage suggests. The club’s location also links the round to a striking South Wales landscape: views extend from the Swansea Bay side toward the uplands of Bannau Brycheiniog, the Welsh name for the Brecon Beacons.
