The Island Golf Club

Overview: The Island Golf Club lies on a narrow peninsula near Donabate, north of Dublin, with sea on three sides and some of the tallest dunes on Ireland's east coast. The 18-hole links plays to par 71 and about 7,041 yards, weaving through valleys between dunes, sand barrens, marsh, and estuary. Its character comes from natural movement rather than manufactured targets. Drives often require a clear line over or around dune shoulders, while the approach angle can change sharply depending on the side of the fairway found.

History: The club is recognised as founded in 1890, although its own research suggests the roots may reach back to 1888 or 1889. A group connected with Royal Dublin first surveyed the peninsula after rowing across from Malahide in 1887, and a local farmer helped cut the original fairways and greens. The original designer is not known. Fred Hawtree later reorganised the links, Eddie Hackett altered it around the clubhouse move in the 1970s, and Martin Hawtree and Mackenzie & Ebert have contributed further modern work.

Did You Know? For decades golfers reached The Island by boat. The crossing from Malahide was part of the club's identity until the clubhouse was moved in 1973, and the course still carries the visual logic of a remote links reached across water rather than through a conventional inland entrance.
