Overview: The Machrie is a links course on Islay above Laggan Bay, where dune ridges, rumpled fairways and Atlantic wind shape the route. The modern course preserves the wild coastal setting while asking for more varied positioning than a simple shoreline out-and-back. Blind approaches, changing lies and sandy ground make the round a study in how a traditional links can evolve without losing its island character.
History: The Machrie was founded in 1891 when Willie Campbell laid out the original course on Islay. The routing changed gradually over the following decades, and D.J. Russell brought the current course up to modern championship standards through work carried out from 2013 to 2018. The course remains the home of Islay Golf Club.
Did You Know? Machrie is related to the Gaelic word machair, a term for the sandy coastal ground associated with links golf. The name describes the landscape beneath the course as much as it identifies the club and resort.
