Overview: Tralee Golf Club occupies the Barrow Peninsula on County Kerry's Atlantic coast, where dunes, high ground, and sea views shape a distinctive 18-hole links. Arnold Palmer designed the present course, which plays to par 72 and roughly 6,975 yards from the back tees. The routing combines a more sheltered opening section with exposed cliff and dune holes, asking for imagination when the wind moves across the peninsula. The natural contours create strong changes of elevation and a sequence of approaches that rarely plays in the same way twice.
History: Tralee Golf Club was instituted in 1896 and began with nine-hole courses near Tralee and Fenit. The club acquired land at Barrow in 1980 and commissioned Arnold Palmer to design a new course. The present layout opened for play in October 1984, replacing the earlier courses and establishing the club's modern identity. The move was a major step in the club's development, taking a local organisation with nineteenth-century roots onto a large coastal site suited to championship golf.
Did You Know? Tralee was Arnold Palmer's only golf-course design in Europe. The club's own history records Palmer saying that he had never encountered land so ideally suited to building a course, a remark that helps explain why the design relies so heavily on the peninsula's existing dunes and cliffs.
