Overview: Woking is a Surrey heathland course on sandy ground at Hook Heath. The par 70 layout measures about 6,606 yards from the back tees and is shaped by heather, pine, open heath and small strategic greens. Its challenge comes from angles and recovery options, so a shorter or more precise drive can be preferable to simply chasing maximum distance.
History: Woking Golf Club was founded in 1893 and the original layout was designed by Tom Dunn. In the early twentieth century, members John Low and Stuart Paton developed the course with strategic hazards and green complexes that influenced later course design. The club has since undertaken drainage, woodland and heathland work while keeping the underlying character of the historic layout.
Did You Know? Woking's central fairway bunkers helped inspire Tom Simpson to study golf architecture. The course is also known for its traditional two-ball culture, a playing format that reflects the club's long emphasis on pace and strategic positioning.
